Luke Blumer and Son commenced shipbuilding in 1848, launching their first ship the following year. Their primary concern was ship repair and rebuilding and they only built new ships when business was quiet. Only eleven ships (the last unfinished) were built during the firm's twenty-year history. The shipyard was taken over by Denton Gray in 1868 and later by Withy Alexander and Company.
