Gladiator - a general history

Owners: Luke & George Blumer, Hartlepool.

Masters: 1849 Richard Hubbuck/Habbad; September 1850-53 George Anson Clarke (C.N. 2654 Yarmouth 1850); February 1853 Alexander S Salter (C.N. 100190 Leith 1857); August 1853 William Pitt Pelham.

Miscellaneous: 16 August 1849 while Gladiator was waiting to leave Hartlepool the carpenter died of cholera.

Voyages: 1850-51 Hartlepool for Archangel; 1852 Hartlepool for the Mediterranean; 1853 Glasgow for Montreal.

Bound from Montreal for Gloucester Gladiator was abandoned about 500 miles from Scilly in 47N/16W on 23 December 1853 & foundered three hours later. The master, crew of ten & the steward’s wife were saved by the vessel Eleanora & landed at Queenstown. Loss recorded in a letter to Hartlepool HM Customs from Luke Blumer, owner.
