William Broderick - a general history

Owners: 1836 Henry Mitcalfe (North Shields) & William Mitcalfe (London) Newcastle-on-Tyne; 1838 Hartlepool Union Shipping Co, Hartlepool; 1845 purchased for £1,425 by Thomas Green (North Shields) Newcastle-on-Tyne; March 1864 Henry, Robert & George Craggs, Middlesbrough.

Masters: 1836-44 George Spence; 1844 Storrow; April 1845-47 James Ogilvie Renton; 1851 Simpson; 1853-55 GG Haggie.

On 9 February 1844 a wood stocked anchor belonging to William Broderick was found & taken to Bridlington; 8 August 1844 in heavy fog she sustained considerable damage in a collision with the vessel England in the St Lawrence River; from North Shields for London with a cargo of coal on 16 December 1849 she was in collision a few miles off Whitby with the Prussian brig Atlas. Both vessels sustained damage & at the inquiry were both found to be at fault; from Shields for London with a cargo of coal on 4 October 1852 she was anchored in Yarmouth Roads when she was struck by the brig Adventure. At the later inquiry the Adventure was found to blame for the collision; from Cronstadt for London she stranded on 6 November 1858 & was later refloated; November 1863 she was abandoned but later taken to Lysekil, Sweden.
