The steamship Onesta was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UC-63 (Karsten von Heydebreck), near the Inner Dowsing Light Vessel, on August 7th, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Newcastle to Genoa with a cargo of coal.
West Hartlepool-born Albert Ernest Kennedy, a Deep Sea Pilot, was lost.
