The circumstances surrounding the loss of the steamship Serbistan are a little unclear. 'British Vessels Lost at Sea 1914-18' lists the ship as being attacked, but not sunk, by a U-boat off Ushant on November 14th, 1916. The Miramar Ship Index lists the ship as sailing from Brest bound for Cardiff on November 16th, 1916, after which the vessel and her crew of 24, was not heard from again.
The West Hartlepool Roll of Honour lists Able Seaman Herbert Knowles Frankland, Able Seaman, aged 32, of 29, Havelock Street, West Hartlepool, as one of the missing crewmen, giving his Date of Death as November 17th, 1916, and Place of Death as Land's End.
