On a voyage from Philadelphia for Aarhus with a cargo of wheat & a total crew of 27 Remus was battered by a heavy gale in the North Sea. She struck rocks near Hornsriff near Aarhuus on the Danish coast on 26 January 1900 breaking her back & parting amidships. 3 of the crew tried to swim to shore with a rope but all drowned. 6 others tried to leave in a boat but it capsized before it was clear of the wreck & 5 drowned. The hull of the vessel was now submerged & the remaining crew took to the rigging. 2 more of the crew attempted to get to land but were also drowned. During the night the master became delirious & shot himself. 2 more of the crew fell from the rigging during the night. The remaining 14 managed to cling on for another 24 hours until they were seen & rescued by the steamer Nordia. All were frostbitten in their hands & feet. The cargo was a total loss. 13 lives lost.
