Fate

On a voyage from London for Sunderland with a crew of 27 & 5 passengers Empire Newcomen was torpedoed by a German motor torpedo boat (S-52) & sank 5 miles south of Dudgeon Light off Cromer on 30 November 1941.

Ten hands were lost including two from West Hartlepool: Percy Aird, aged 54 and William Foster Skirving aged 58.

The other crew members lost were: The Master Digby George Ivor Dyball Paske, Raymond Donald, John Webster Kinnersley, David McKenzie, Joseph Stanyer, Andrew Wilkie, Arthur Harland and Clifford James Lloyd..
