The Traveller's Rest public house was, in the 1800s, on the southern boundary of West Hartlepool County Borough and the farmland around it was known as Cold Knuckles (Cauld Knuckles) It was in these fields at Cauld Knuckles that West Hartlepool Races were held and also Durham Agricultural Show in the 1800s. The public house is clearly shown on maps of the late 1800s in the current position on the main road out of town.
