Fate

Bound from the Tyne for Gibraltar with a cargo of coal & Coke Arkleside was sunk by gunfire from German submarine (U-33 Hans-Wilhelm Von Dresky) off the Scilly Isles, 48.00N/9.30W 16.9.39 on 16 September 1939. The Master was Robert William Edmundson.

West Hartlepool Steamer Lost. Captain & Crew All Safe. The West Hartlepool steamer Arkleside (1,567 tons) has been lost at sea, according to information received by the owners, Messrs. Smith, Hogg and Co., of West Hartlepool. It is understood that the captain. Captain R. W. Edmondson, of Osmotherley, and the crew, who come mainly from the North-East Coast, have been landed.
