The battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary was sunk by the German battlecruiser Derfflinger at the Battle of Jutland, on May 31st, 1916. One thousand two hundred and sixty-six officers and men were lost, including eleven from the Hartlepools: John Thomas Broom; Joseph Burns; Herbert Henry Greenwell; William Jeffries; Joseph Jones; John Patrick Kelly; Peter Larkin; Benjamin Lupton; Albert Lowry Morrison; Robert Robinson Smythe; and F.E. Whiteway.
