The Scout Cruiser HMS Pathfinder was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-21, off St. Abb's Head, Scotland, on September 5th, 1914. Two hundred and fifty-nine of her crew were lost, including one from the Hartlepools - Thomas Whiteway.
