The Birmingham-class Light Cruiser HMS Nottingham was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-52, in the North Sea, on August 19th, 1916. Thirty-nine crewmen were lost, including Stoker Charles Reginald Kitching, of West Hartlepool.
