The Cressy-class Armoured Cruiser Aboukir, and her sister ships Cressy and Hogue, were torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U-9, on September 22nd, 1914. Five hundred and twenty seven men from the Aboukir lost their lives, including three from the Hartlepools, William John George Barrett, John Hogan and John Sanderson.
