Fate

The steamship Canonesa was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-57 when some 14 miles off Worthing, on a voyage from Boulogne to Newport in ballast, on May 1st, 1918. Although the ship safely made port, 8 members of the crew were lost, including James Sparke of West Hartlepool.

The other crewmen who lost their lives were: Bergen, Leo; Diaz, Vincent; Flanagan, Martin Joseph; Minshull, James; Samaras, Alexos; Satchwell, Ernest; Wingden, Samuel.
