Fate

The steamship Mabel Baird was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-57 (Otto Steinbrinck), 4 miles south-west of The Lizard on 22nd December, 1917. The ship was on a voyage from Penarth to Fecamp with a cargo of coal. Master - J. Stevenson.

Six crew were lost including two from the Hartlepools:
William Walker Coward
John Thomas Granger

The other four men who lost their lives were: Clayton, James; Gure Ateye; Hatim Ibrahim; Thompson, Arthur.
