A reminder of much warmer places during a cold November week , a picture of the visit of Fiji Barbarians playing against West on Brierton Lane as part of a tour of South America and Europe that year.
Then part of the Pacific Islands Rugby Group, along with Samoa and Tonga, Fiji is still remembered for the day in 1970 when they defeated the Barbarians at Gosforth by 29 pts to 9pts. The Fiji Islands have played Rugby since the 1880s.
Travelling a long way, the side made a trip of it, and took in seven fixtures in Argentina and Parquay before the European leg. This involved games with Pontypool, Llanelli, Leicester Orrell and Bath and after West the Provines of Ireland beckoned then on to the European Continent
