With the Australians on tour in 1947 and the need to pick a North East Counties XV to play them at Gosforth on 4th October, , Durham played Northumberland on 13th September, 1947 with this XV pictured above, following which they had a Possibles v Probable’s games on the 20th. This resulted in four Hartlepool Rovers players getting into the North East Counties XV, Pinkney, Agar and Sheedy along with Pendlington. Also included where Best and McDonald, although he withdrew have injured h is ankle playing for Co-Optimists the previous Wednesday before the Wallabies match!
The photo also emphasises the start of the rise of Billingham Synthonia RFC with five of the players from that Club, note also the highly polished boots and the white boot laces, very much the order of the day for many years in most team!
The result though was a whitewash for the Counties, going down by 49 pts to nil.
Among the players, A.E. Agar, played for England later he became President of the RFU., Ranald McDonald, played for Scotland and the British Lions in 1950. Harold Boagey was a product of Hartlepool Athletic before joining Rovers; he then joined Hull F.C. as a professional with the Rugby League and Harry Keenan went on to Referee International matches.
