Pyman Cup League Tables 1920 to 1929.

There appear to be no records in existence of the Leagues prior to the Second World War so these records have been extracted from the files of the “Mail” Hartlepool, the archives of Durham County RFU., the Durham County South District Junior RFU, Hartlepool B B O B RFC., Hartlepool Rovers FC., West Hartlepool RFC, the Robert Wood Collection held by the Museums Service in Hartlepool and from the memories and recollections of players and Committee members over the years. In the Annual Report it was reported that only three sides were to compete for the competition in the 1st Division. Hopefully, more sides would join. The Mail on 16.9.1926 reported this fact pointing out many clubs had found things too hot for them and preferred friendly fixtures. The Mail correspondent hoped that more sides would join but play the game without thought of the points at the end of matters.

A Mail photo records that the Seamen's Institute won the 2nd Teams Cup and Pyman Cup. 

However, in 1947 an attempt was made to revive the Pyman League at the Durham County RFU but it was denied and the Minute dated 18 June 1947 reads:-

“A request was received from the South District Junior R.F.U. for the re-formation of the Pyman League which was suspended in or about 1926 as a result of the investigations into alleged breaches of the rules as to the transfer of players, and a gift or honorarium made to Mr Bowring.

After hearing expressions of opinions by Hartlepool representatives and the Hon. Sec. Junior Clubs it was resolved by 8 votes to six that permission for such re-formation be not sought from the R.F.U.”
