Polzella - a general history

LOCAL LAUNCH. CARGO VESSEL FOR CARDIFF OWNERS.      
On Monday, Messrs. William Gray and Co., Ltd., launched from their dockyard the steel screw steamer Polzella, which is being built to the order of the Eclipse Shipping and Trading Co., Ltd., (Messrs J. J. Thomas and Co. managers), Cardiff.
The vessel, which is of the open shelter deck type, will take the highest class in Lloyd’s Register, and is of the following dimensions: Length overall 413ft. 6in.; breadth, 54ft. 2 ½ in., depth moulded to upper deck, 27ft. 6 ½ in.
She is constructed on the cellular double bottom principle, with deep bulb angle framing and has six watertight bulkheads, together with a steel centre line bulkhead and wood shifting boards dividing the holds for grain carrying. The fore and after peaks are suitable for water ballast.
Triple-expansion engines having cylinders 26, 43, and 71 inches diameter by 48 in. stroke, and three natural draught boilers working at a pressure of 180lbs. per square inch, will be supplied by the Central Marine Engineering Works of the builders.
THE NAMING CEREMONY. The ship and machinery are being built under the supervision of Mr. A. E. Mills on behalf of the owners, and the ceremony of naming the steamer Polzella was performed by Mrs. J. J. Thomas.   
The owners were represented by Mr. J. J. Thomas, and the builders were represented by Sir William Gray, Bt., chairman; Mr. F. C. Pyman, managing director; Messrs. M. S. Gibb, J. H. Farmer and A. McGlashan, directors, Mr. Thos. Simpson, general manager and Mr. Young, yard manager
Amongst those present were Lady Gray, Mrs. F. C. Pyman, Mr. and Mrs. Graham (Middlesbrough), Mrs. Gibb, Mrs. Farmer, Dr Pickworth, and Messrs. C. A. Miller and L. Storey (Lloyd’s Register of Shipping).
