Clumberhall - Trial

TRIAL TRIP OF THE S. S. CLUMBERHALL

The steamer Clumberhall, built by Messrs. William Gray and Co., Ltd., West Hartlepool, to the order of the West Hartlepool Steam Navigation Co., successfully ran her official sea trials on Wednesday, August 20th 1930.

The vessel, is of the open shelter deck type, and is built to the highest class in Lloyd’s Register and is of the following dimensions :-  Length over all, 439 ft.,  breadth, 55 ft. 3in.,  depth moulded to the upper  deck, 24ft. 4in.    

She is constructed on the cellular double bottom principle with deep channel framing,
and has seven watertight bulkheads together with a steel centre line bulkhead clear of hatches. The vessel is fitted with a deep tank.  The fore and after peaks are suitable for water ballast.
    
Spacious accommodation for the officers is arranged in a steel house amidships. The engineers are berthed in steel houses alongside casing with the necessary mess room accommodation. Large airy accommodation is arranged in the poop for the crew, with separate messrooms.
    
For the quick handling of cargo 12 7” x 12” steam winches are provided which work 12 derricks.  A 25 ton derrick is fitted at after side of foremast. A direct acting steam windlass forward and combined steam and hand steam steering gear are fitted in houses aft. The masts are suitable for the Manchester canal bridges.
    
The vessel is complete in all respects as a first-class cargo steamer, her equipment including an efficient wireless installation, and electric light throughout.

                                               THE ENGINES
           
The propelling machinery supplied by the Central Marine Engineering Works of the builders, consists of reciprocating engines of the balanced quadruple, inverted, direct-acting, surface condensing type, and three large forced draught boilers working at a pressure of 260lbs. per square inch, fitted with superheaters.
      
A number of auxiliaries of the “C.M.E.W.” type, also supplied by the Central marine Engine Works, are installed.
    
The owners were represented on the trials by Mr. J.E Guthe (chairman) Mr. G. E. Kito, Mr. R. T. Slinn, and Mr. E.G. Roe, (directors) Capt Higginbottom (captain of the steamer), Mr. C. F. Sanderson and Mr. C. N. Sanderson (under whose supervision ship and machinery have been built), Mr. J.E. Wilson, Mr. E.A. Withy, Mr. R.E. Johnson, Mr. R.E. Read, and Mr. F.S. Scott, and Mr. Lund of the West Hartlepool office.

The builders were represented by Mr F. C. Pyman, (managing director) and Mr. J.H. Farmer, (director).
    
Amongst those present were Mrs. J.E Guthe, Mrs. J.H. Farmer, the Misses Guthe, the Misses Fothergill, Miss South, Mr. Renwick, Mr B.L. Denton, the Rev Parkinson, Mr. J. Fothergill, Capt. Stephens, and Mr. C.A. Miller of  Lloyd’s Register of Shipping.
