Rudby - a general history

On 28 June 1941 Rudby sailed in convoy from Methil Roads in ballast routed to Oban for further instructions. The following day was thick fog and the convoy Commodore ship signalled for an emergency turn to be executed. Rudby blew her whistle to indicate to the ship directly behind her that she was about do a 180 degree turn. When the turn was almost completed she collided with the steamer Yorkwood of the Constantine S.S. Line Ltd. Rudby’s anchor tore through her crew forward accommodation crushing three men to death.. One of the crew, Henry Wharton, was pulled from the wreckage and was transferred to a destroyer for medical treatment where a short time later he died from his injuries and was buried at sea. The ship then sailed for Aberdeen where two of the bodies were returned home for burial, the third buried at sea.

Amanita arrived for breaking at Savona on 27 September 1958.
