Brantford City - a general history

Masters: 1880 G Alton: 1881 Lund: 1881-82 RG Clark: 1882-83 Fenwick: 1883 John Alderson.

On a voyage from London for Halifax & Boston with a general cargo, 26 crew & five passengers (cattle men) in heavy fog Brantford City struck Goose Rock at Arnolds Point near Little Harbour, Lockeport, Nova Scotia on 10 August 1883. She took 12 feet of water into her hold & attempts were made to pump it our but were unsuccessful. On 17 September 1883 at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Captain Scott of the Marines & Fisheries Dept gave judgement relative to the loss of the vessel & found that the master neglected to make soundings & this was the sole contributor to the loss of the ship. His certificate was suspended for six months but because of his conduct in trying to save the ship & cargo it was recommended that he be allowed to hold a 2nd mate’s certificate for the period.
