Hartlepool seafarers lost at sea

Norman, Robert Charles

Stoker
West Hartlepool
Bridport Dorset
16/2/1877
31/5/1916

Robert Charles Norman was one of 1017 crewmen on HMS Indefatigable who were killed during the Battle of Jutland when it was hit by shells from the German ship Von der Tann.

He was born in Bridport, Dorset where his parents remained and they were informed of his death at their address there at 5 Castle Square.

Although Robert's name is on the Hartlepool Roll of Honour for WW1, it is unclear what his connection was with the town.

In 1911, he was already a sailor and on board HMS Hermes in Australia.
