The start of golf at Seaton was down to Dr Duncan McCuaig moving from Scotland to Middlesbrough in 1874. When he could find nowhere to play his beloved golf he searched for a suitable venue and eventually rented land at Seaton from Lord Eldon. To the left of the golf clubhouse there is the small block of houses known as Southend and the lifeboat house. To the right the building that became known as the Cafe Royal can be seen in the distance and nearer to the clubhouse is the flagpole.

On July 31st 1961, a new clubhouse was opened at Hartlepool Golf Club. It had cost £30,000. The ceremony was attended by the mayor and mayoress of Hartlepool  Alderman and  Mrs Aird and that of West Hartlepool, Aderman and Mrs Ashton. Also in attendance were Club captain Mr J Priestley, Durham Golf Union president Mr A Harrison and Mr G Portas the Club President.

Pattison's caption for this image was 'A Seaton Professional.' James Kay was born about 1855 in Scotland, was married to Kate & lived at Southend. Here he is in 1888 outside the clubhouse with his caddy. The cockle girl's shack is to the side of the view.

The lifeboat house is on the extreme left with the golf clubhouse opposite. The customs house stands behind the clubhouse and just opposite is a wooden structure which was lived in by Bella, one of the cockle girls.

The inscription reads "The Northern Daily Mail Cup presented to Seaton Carew Golf Club by Portsmouth & Sunderland Newspapers Limited  September 1937". Its whereabouts is currently unknown.

1937. The presentation of cups and trophies at the Seaton Carew Golf Club inaugral event by Sir (later Lord) Samuel Storey. Mr. C.G. Bunting was Club Captain at this time.
