1966 - Hartlepool Rovers v Durham City - Not a good day!

What we know about this image :

Neither a great game nor a great result for Rovers in their 1966 appearance in the Senior Cup on “Ashbrooke” Sunderland, which saw Durham City make it five wins in a row in an undistinguished game with Durham City which saw them go down by 8 – 0.

Dudley Hallwood, the Newcastle Journal Cartoonist, was on hand to lighten the day with his wit, whimsy and brilliant caricatures of the players and West man, Tom Metcalfe who handed over the Cup, making some witty comments on the other events (especially Bryan Johnson's “Seven Veils”!)  that day with the Grand National and Varsity Boat Race also running.

If it is compensation for Rovers who came second they were in good company, Freddie was second in the National to Anglo by 20 lengths, Cambridge losing by almost 4 lengths in the boat race.
