The photograph of West 1st XV taken at Brierton Lane, prior to a game against Stockton on 8th September 1976, which West won 8pts v 4pts.
For the record, the win West came from two tries to one, Derek Boyd scored the first try in the right corner, unconverted. Reg Clarke scored the second in the left corner, engineered from a strike against the head that also went unconverted. Stockton scored a consolation try towards the end of the game. Regulars missing from the pic due to injuries are Dave Stubbs and Jim Parkinson.
West also qualified for the Northern Merit Table in the wake of their first ever run in the Sunday Telegraph Pennant during the previous season. Both “competitions” were part of the growing demand for “Leagues” at this time which eventually led to the present set up being constructed in 1986/1987.
They had a return on Merit Table games in 76/77 of 45%, in playing 10 winning 4 drawing 1, and as a mark of how the world changes some of the clubs they needed to qualify were Halifax, Wilmslow, Gosforth, Wakefield and Liverpool.
